WSPR Awards

The WSPR sponsors the following awards for the 2024 WSPR meeting

WSPR Award in Research by a Young Investigator

The WSPR confers this award sponsored by Abbott Nutrition on a chosen nominee in recognition of outstanding research in a field related to pediatrics. The nominee must have a junior faculty (assistant professor, instructor) academic appointment. The work does not need to have been published. The Awardee will receive $1,000 and an engraved plaque to be presented at the annual meeting. The award winner will be asked to present aspects of his/her work, or a summary of it, at the combined plenary session. Nominations may be tendered by an active or emeritus member of WSPR.
Nominations should include:

  1. Clear statement of the reasons for the nomination of the candidate
  2. Copy of the nominee’s CV
  3. Copies of reprints, preprints or other documents if applicable
  4. The award may be given to more than one nominee at the discretion of the Committee, or it may be omitted if the Committee considers that an outstanding candidate has not been nominated.
  5. Completed nominations should be submitted electronically by October 6, 2023 to:

David W. Smith Pediatric Trainee Research Award

This award is sponsored by Abbott Nutrition and will be accompanied by a plaque and $1000 honorarium. The recipient will present his/her paper at the plenary session of the WSPR. The award is based upon an abstract submitted for presentation at the annual meeting. The criteria for this award include: original, unpublished research by a pediatric resident or fellow, under the auspices of a WSPR member or in a WSPR-affiliated program, during house staff training or within the first three years of the applicant’s pediatric fellowship training program. The award is given during or within one year following the above-described period of training. Nomination can be submitted by an active or emeritus member of WSPR.
Nominations should include:

  1. Narrative letter describing the work, its significance, background of the nominee & assurance (signature) that the nominee will be available to present the work
  2. Copy of the abstract must accompany the letter
  3. Copy of the nominee’s CV
  4. Copies of reprints, preprints or other documents if applicable
  5. The award may be given to more than one nominee at the discretion of the Committee, or it may be omitted if the Committee considers that an outstanding candidate has not been nominated.
  6. Completed nominations should be submitted electronically by October 6, 2023 to:

Joseph W. St. Geme Jr. Education Award

This award is conferred annually by the WSPR in recognition of outstanding achievement in pediatric education. The award is presented to a winner at the plenary session of the meeting and is accompanied by a $1,000 award and a plaque. Nomination can be submitted by an active or emeritus member of WSPR. There is no age limit on this award.

Nominations should include:

  1. Narrative letter detailing the reasons why this candidate is considered worthy of the award
  2. Copy of the nominee’s CV
  3. Supportive data on achievements and education
  4. Completed nominations should be submitted electronically by October 6, 2023 to:

The WSPR also sponsors the following merit awards based on best scored abstract among the submission for the WSPR meeting

WSPR Pediatric Resident Research Award

  1. This award is given to the Pediatric Trainee (PL1, PL2 or PL3) submitting the most outstanding abstract to the annual meeting. The research may be in any area of pediatrics. WSPR sponsors this award, which includes a $750 honorarium. The resident will be asked to present his/her abstract at either a subspecialty or plenary session. This award is given to the Top Scoring Abstract submitted by a pediatric resident to Lowell Glasgow Student Research Award
  2. This award is given to the student submitting the most outstanding abstract to the annual WSPR meeting. The research may be in any area of pediatrics. WSPR sponsors this award, which includes a $750 honorarium. The student will be asked to present his/her abstract at either a subspecialty or plenary session. This award is presented to the Top Scoring Abstract submitted by a student to WSPR.
  3. Checking the student research box on the abstract form flags the abstract for consideration.

Other Travel Awards

  1. Abstracts will be selected by the WSPR officers on the basis of merit and ranking by subspecialty reviewers.
  2. Awards will vary year to year depending on sponsorships available.
  3. Awardees must make an oral or poster presentation of the abstract at a subspecialty session of the meeting.
